Since 1921, more than 426,000 California veterans have enjoyed a better option. Builders or real estate agents will point them toward CalVet, where they can take advantage of its bond-allocated program for veterans and great customer service from skilled and caring loan originators and staff.
And depending upon the market conditions, they often find better interest rates than they’d get from commercial lenders, along with CalVet’s outstanding fire, disaster, and hazard insurance.
Count Army veteran Greg Hutchinson and his wife, Ashley, among the satisfied clients. They worked with CalVet Loan Associate Property Agent Lesa Walker to finance and close escrow on a home in the San Diego area in November 2020.

“The Hutchinsons were working with a large builder in the industry,” Walker said. “They were referred over to CalVet to utilize a great VA Bond Allocated program to provide them with the best financing options that would be available to them. The builder felt CalVet’s options would best serve this veteran and his family in purchasing a home.”
And they did, with Walker guiding them through the process and made it seem effortless.
“It was as easy as could be,” said Ashley, of the home loan that closed ahead of schedule. “The builder told us we’d get a better deal and better communication (with CalVet). We were surprised by all that CalVet did for us. There were no issues. They did a great job.”
Walker and her team handled so much, Ashley said, that it eased the stress of buying a home under construction as the pandemic progressed and with a seven-year-old daughter cooped up at home.
In fact, the only glitch had nothing to do with CalVet. Due to COVID-19’s impact on supply chains, the builder experienced difficulties in obtaining some of the appliances promised to the Hutchinsons. The builder installed lesser-quality equipment to pass inspection, then immediately swapped them out for the higher-grade appliances when they arrived.
Ashley is a psychotherapist and clinical social worker. She and Greg were married in 2012, just a few weeks before he deployed to Afghanistan. Greg — followed both his Green Beret dad and mom into the Army — served in the infantry and lost several friends in combat. He struggled emotionally for several years after returning, Ashley said.
“Only in the last two years has he really felt re-integrated,” she said. Greg used his GI Bill benefits to earn his degree from the University of Washington. He now works for the federal Veterans Affairs working with veterans and veterans’ groups.
“They were super responsive,” Walker said. “Whatever I needed, they provided. If they had questions, they knew they could call me. I provided them the resources of how the industry worked and what makes us unique.”

And it’s what makes the Hutchinsons satisfied CalVet clients who now count themselves among the fans of the century-old Home Loan Program.
“We’ve told a lot of people,” Ashley said.
