IN 100th YEAR OF LENDING, ACCESS TO CALVET HOME LOAN HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

Build the perfect home with a
CalVet home loan.

You are a veteran wanting to purchase or build a home in California.

A first-timer nervous about the process? Or, your credit rating is a bit spotty, perhaps?

Relax. You served your nation. The California Department of Veterans Affairs’ experienced and dedicated Home Loans staff stands ready to serve you, just as they have helped hundreds of thousands of veterans and their families realize the American dream since 1921.

CalVet offers outstanding service on VA loans at competitive interest rates, unbeatable fire and disaster insurance, the ability to close loans often in 30 days, and can underwrite loans that conventional lenders will not.

In fact, most commercial lenders seldom look beyond FICO credit scores and routinely make loans and then sell them to investors.

CalVet services its loans, Loan Originator Lesa Walker said, and takes the time to investigate thoroughly a veteran’s financial history and ability to repay the loan. Some veterans have solid to outstanding credit histories that make a loan a slam-dunk. Other loans require more advocacy, research, and TLC. CalVet agents will do everything within their power to make the deal a go and the veteran’s dream a reality.

“We look at the whole picture,” Walker said. “We look for collateral, character, and stability. Do we have a deal that meets VA (criteria) and do they have the ability to repay?”

They want to understand the veteran’s bill-paying history, and identify ways to ensure the veteran develops money management skills needed to make the monthly mortgage payment with financial room to spare.

CalVet agents work to preapprove veterans, and then consult with the veteran’s real estate agent to convey the price ranges of homes for which they qualify.

If the veteran simply cannot qualify now, CalVet agents will lay out exactly what it will take for them to qualify in six months or a year down the road.

Loan Originator Eric Myrdal created such a game plan for veteran Ludovico Anthony Calabro, who followed it to the letter, got his loan, and moved into his home in Stockton, as reported in a CalVet Connect story in May.

Getting started is easy. By visiting the Home Loans Program’s page here, you can find everything you need to know, from eligibility to current interest rates, to information about the loan process. You’ll learn how to get pre-approved, the benefits of the CalVet Home Loan Program, and answers to frequently asked questions.

Or you can talk directly to a CalVet loan originator at 866-653-2510 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.).

“Call us,” Walker said. “We are here to help. We are all about talking to you.”

Typically, you will receive a response within 24 to 48 hours from one of CalVet’s loan originators, who will get you started.
