John Canley, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Oxnard, is in line to receive the military’s highest award – the Medal of Honor.
Canley was approved for the award for his actions in and outside of Hue, Vietnam in 1968.
The Medal of Honor has been bestowed on 3,496 men and one woman (a Civil War surgeon) since President Abraham Lincoln signed it into law on Dec. 21, 1861. It is reserved for those members of the armed forces who distinguish themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.
