Activist fights state restrictions on assisted death for Veterans Home residents in Yountville

NAPA VALLEY REGISTER — Sept. 10 — Right-to-die advocates scored one of their biggest victories two years ago, when California allowed patients to end their lives with doctors’ assistance. But a state directive may block the way to assisted death for one group of Californians: those living at the eight state-owned retirement homes for military veterans. Residents of the Veterans Home of California in Yountville and its peers must first leave the facilities if they intend to use life-ending drugs, even under a doctor’s direction, according to a policy passed by the state Department of Veterans Affairs in January.

American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans Memorial Model on Display at CalVet in Sacramento

SIERRA SUN TIMES — Sept. 4 — Visitors to CalVet headquarters have the opportunity to view the model of a new memorial statue that will honor American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans. The sculpture design, which was selected by the official American Indian Alaska Native Veterans Memorial Committee, was created by renowned sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg and titled “The Gift.”

Habitat For Humanity Veterans Development Continues In Santa Clarita

KHTS 1220 — Sept. 7 — Habitat for Humanity’s Santa Clarita CalVet Residential Enriched Neighborhood (REN) continues to receive support from City of Santa Clarita officials. The city has contributed $350,000 to the development of the community. Since its involvement in the project in June, the city has offered financial support to help complete the final phase of construction. Upon completion, the CalVet REN program will offer California veterans and their families permanent, affordable home ownership and family enrichment services, according to city officials.

VA Unveils Claims Submission Option That Promises to Complete Claims within 30 Days

VA — Sept. 7 — Today, as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) continued efforts to improve timeliness of services for Veterans and their families, VA unveiled the Decision Ready Claims (DRC) initiative, a disability claims submission option with accredited Veterans Service Organizations (VSO) that promises to deliver faster claims decisions to Veterans and their families.
